Weekly Lesson Overview for Grade 5 (May 25-29)
Announcements:
- On Mon., we will visit the MHS to learn more about what to expect in G6.
- G3 will lead the assembly on Fri. and student of the month awards will be given out.
Math – We will finish up the unit on fractions and ratios by learning how fractional units relate to the whole. Lastly, we will learn how to divide fractions. Then, we will spend time reviewing and the chap. 8 test is tentatively scheduled for Fri., the 29th and the following Mon. Students have review sheets and should be preparing.
Students have access to ixl (www.ixl.com) so they can review and explore concepts at their own pace. The parent letter also lists math games that you can play with your child to help him/her hone their math skills.
Language arts – We will continue reading and examining historical fiction books. On Tues., and Fri., we will meet in our Book Clubs to discuss the historical fiction books we are reading that are set during slavery in the U.S. During Reader’s Workshop, we will evaluate the books we have read. We will also review the books to find out how the authors created suspense and tension.
In Writer’s Workshop, we will write our rough drafts on the Google docs. Then, we will start the revision process. We will focus on creating a strong lead to hook readers and creating tension to hold our readers’ attention.
Social studies – We will continue learning about what life was like during colonial times. We will learn what people did during this time period by visiting stations such as the shoemaker’s shop, the College of William and Mary, and the local church.
Science – We will explore mixtures and solutions through reading, games, and activities. Then, we will start learning about physical and chemical changes. We will do some baking on a field trip in 2 weeks to witness these concepts in real life.
